10 Important Tips For Muay Thai Beginners
Tips for Muay Thai Beginners
I have listed the 10 most important tips for Muay Thai beginners that will help you survive your early days in Muay Thai. Congratulations on taking the first step in your journey as a Muay Thai fighter!
Signing up for a Muay Thai training class was one of the best decisions that I made in my life. Yes, the beginning stage is both an exciting and challenging part. Because at first you suck at it, but after a while, you start training, and you start to see improvements. The feeling is fantastic.
The thing about Muay Thai is that people just do it and until they injure themselves, they start scrambling for help around Google or on forums, but if I had to start all over again I wish there was a person to tell me these tips that I’m going to share with you in this article that will help you ease your learning curve in the Muay Thai art.
There are tips that most people don’t tell you about it until you ask. It’s not that Muay Thai fighters are selfish or they don’t want to share their knowledge.
The tips that I’m going to share with you become second nature to Muay Thai fighters after they train for a while and they think it’s not an important thing to share it, but it’s the opposite. You have to know these things first because they will help you in your journey in Muay Thai. So let’s get started with the first tip.
Tip #1 – Improve Performance by Running
From my experience, just running is one of the most effective exercise routines you can do to improve your overall performance. running will power up your endurance and stamina, and if you combine it with sprint intervals, you will increase your stamina even stronger. So if you’re a Muay Thai beginner, start running right now and you will become an even better fighter. Let’s go tip number two.
tip #2 – Invest in Decent Gear
Invest in good decent gear. You can use the ones at the gym, but they stink and that’s because everyone uses them. If you want to buy your gloves and forgo the used stinky gear, you can read the article I wrote on “how to prevent smelly gloves”.
The gloves that are in the gym may stink, I don’t know where you train. Only you know. You can invest $50 on some good decent gloves that will be yours alone. Make sure that they have good wrist protection. Make sure the gloves are manufactured with great material.
If you invest, you know, like once per year in a good pair of gloves… say like $50 or $100 (if you can afford it), it will help you a lot in your Muay Thai journey starting. And especially so that your hands don’t smell.
Tip #3 – Wrap your Hands
Learn to wrap your hands. Every champion does it before his training, before his fights, so learn to wrap your hands.
Wrapping your hands is one of the most important things you can do because it will help you prevent injuries to your wrists, your fingertips, your knuckles, on your fingers, and it’s also a great way to absorb the moisture from your training in your gloves. So wrapping your hands is one of the most important things you have to learn. This is one of the first things to learn when you start Muay Thai.
Start learning how to wrap your hands. You should buy at least a pair or two of hand wraps to have them so you can switch them up. This is going to help you prepare for training and to make your Muay Thai journey a whole lot easier. Okay, it’s time for tip number four.
Tip #4 – Work on your Form
Work on your form. You have to focus on your form at first, and not on power and speed because you will lose your form and develop bad skills. At first learn to hit correctly, not on power and speed, and don’t try to rush your techniques.
I know at the beginning stage you are excited about the training, you are excited to put it to the test, everything you’ve learned, but try to focus on your form.
When you hit the bag or when you spark, try to hit it correctly. The jab, the cross, the hooks, the legs, the checks, focus on everything. Work on your form. that’s one of the most important things that will help you advance faster as a fighter during your Muay Thai training as a beginner.
At first when you work on your form and you hit correctly, then afterward you can add speed, then you can add power, and then you will get better and better.
Trust me, you will see your improvement in your sparring sessions because you know how to hit correctly and you won’t be afraid to hit. That’s an important thing to do.
Tip #5 – Stay Hydrated During Training
This is my favorite part. Fuel up! Yes, you have to eat well after your Muay Thai training. Think about this. Our bodies are like a car. If you don’t put the right fuel in it, the body won’t function well.
So, you have to eat clean food, I mean clean as in healthy. Here is an article covering my personal six diet rules that have helped me improve my Muay Thai training every day by giving me the energy I need to improve.
I train twice per day. So again, think about this, food is fuel, if you feed the beast, the beast will fight greater.
Tip #6 – Eat Healthy & Fuel Up
This is my favorite part.

Tip #7 -Get Private Training
Tip number seven is to get some private training. Yes, from time to time if you can afford it, get some private training because you will grow a lot faster. You will learn a lot during your
private training sessions because the coach is only focusing on your Muay Thai. And he will show you all the mistakes that you’ve been making so far. He will correct you.
I know you have seen how many people are in your class. A Muay Thai class, in general, has about 20 to 30 people training, and a coach cannot watch each one of his students. So, you know the class is full of people, and everyone will be asking questions.
And for the coach, it’s hard to take that many questions, to answer that many questions, and to help all the people at once. But getting private training will help you not only by improving your Muay Thai training but also because now you have your coach’s undivided attention.
I do private training here at my gym in the morning. I have two or three guys in my private training because I want my private training to be quality, and not, you know, full.
I also have Muay Thai classes in the evening. This is a good way to improve your Muay Thai techniques. You can train with class and whenever possible, train again during a private lesson. Get private training.
Tip #8 – Stretch your Muscles for Training
Number eight is stretching. It’s another one of those most important tips in every Muay Thai training session.
You have to prepare your muscles for your training. That’s why you have to do the stretching before your training, and you have to do the stretching after your training, because your muscles will be tired, and you have to stretch them to relax.
Even your mind will be relaxed after your hard training if you start stretching. So don’t overlook this exercise. Stretch a lot, stretch before, and stretch after. Do this every day! Every day in your Muay Thai training.
Tip #9 -Avoid Overtraining with Rest & Recover
Tip number nine and the most important is rest. Yes, that’s how you recover and you avoid overtraining. During your resting period, you become much stronger, and you’re going to be much more powerful and energetic for your next training sessions to give your best.
So don’t forget to rest at least seven hours per night, and if you train two times per day, have an hour between your training to rest and recover. This will help you improve your techniques in Muay Thai and will make it much easier for your Muay Thai journey.
I don’t mean easier as in it’s going to be like cake, I mean easier like you know, being able to adapt much better than you would if you were exhausted. If you rest it will get you more excited, more energetic, and you can do more in your training. So don’t forget this! Rest! Rest! Rest and sleep a lot.
Well, you know, I’m not saying to overdo this either. You know your body. If you don’t it will tell you, “Hey, I need to lay down, right now!”.
Tip #10 – Ask for Advice From Experienced Fighters
Number ten on the list of tips is to ask fighters for advice. Ask fighters from the people who are at the level you want to get to. I have asked many fighters who are, you know, above me in level and skill. I’ve asked, “How did you reach that level?”, “How did you do it?”, and they give me advice.
Some of them give advice and some of them don’t give any. I don’t get mad because I know every fighter is occupied with their progress. But it’s important to ask. If you don’t ask you will never know. You won’t have anything to lose if you ask. So, ask other people how did they manage to get where you want to go, and if you get a bit of advice, it will be a win for you.
The simplest solutions are always the best. So don’t overthink your Muay Thai journey. Just keep showing up, working on your drills, training hard every day, and listening to the tips that I’ve listed in this training article. Keep on working. Stay strong. Be unstoppable.
